FDA-approved versus compounded: pharmacy due diligence · research updated October 28, 2026

Wegovy options

Do not assume a cheaper compounded offer is equivalent to FDA-approved Wegovy, Zepbound or Foundayo. Examine the legal and medical differences first.

Product identity: Wegovy is prescription semaglutide used for weight management in eligible patients. The oral tablet and weekly injection are different products with distinct dosage schedules and administration instructions. A clinician must determine eligibility.

Compounding and brand-name safeguards

  1. Approval is product-specific. FDA-approved branded products have been reviewed for safety, efficacy and quality; compounded versions have not.
  2. Current compounding restrictions. Following resolution of shortages, copying an approved drug generally faces additional federal restrictions; eligibility depends on the clinical circumstances and applicable law.
  3. Who made the medicine. Verify the state-licensed pharmacy or relevant outsourcing facility and the exact active ingredient and dosage form.
  4. Avoid unsupported equivalence. Sublingual drops, lozenges, “oral tirzepatide” and other unapproved formats should not be presented as proven substitutes.
  5. Report questionable marketing. Review FDA safety alerts and ask your prescriber or pharmacist before purchasing an unapproved product.

What matters specifically for Wegovy?

The pill requires particular fasting and water instructions; the injection is administered weekly. Different labeled doses and savings conditions make price comparisons dose-specific.

For the tablet, check morning fasting instructions and how to separate it from food, beverages and other oral medicines. For the injection, ask about dose escalation, pen instructions and reliable refills.

What to ask your clinician: Am I a candidate for the tablet, injection, or neither, given my medical history and other medicines? A clinician—not an affiliate site—must review the full prescribing information, precautions, pregnancy considerations, other medicines and any contraindications.

Separate the medication price from care charges

NovoCare lists different self-pay prices by tablet strength and pen dose; introductory injection terms and ongoing refill costs differ. Check the currently selected dose, eligibility, and date before quoting an amount. A quoted “from” amount may not cover visits, lab tests, delivery, supplies or subsequent prescriptions.

Unapproved compounded formulations are not automatically substitutable for FDA-approved medicines. In particular, do not market oral tirzepatide as an approved alternative.

FDA status: FDA-approved prescription medication for applicable labeled indications. Not interchangeable with unapproved compounded semaglutide.

In particular, products sold as compounded semaglutide or tirzepatide are not FDA-approved versions of these brands; see the FDA warning source below.

The exact manufacturer page above is editorial and untracked. A provider affiliate referral may pay this publisher a commission, but it is a general care-program sign-up, not a confirmed purchase of Wegovy. Contact the provider to verify whether the named medication is available, under what circumstances, and at what full cost.

Researching compounded semaglutide instead?

This is a different, unapproved category and must not be sold as Wegovy or an equivalent. Tyde Wellness offer eligibility in our previously recorded campaign is US adults ages 25–60 excluding California; verify current campaign and legal eligibility.

Frequently asked question

Is compounded medication the same as the FDA-approved brand?

Use the specific drug’s FDA label, manufacturer information, state eligibility and full prescription pathway—not a program headline—to make an informed decision with a healthcare professional. A care-program link does not reserve or prescribe this medication.
