Compounded GLP-1 Storage and Travel Guide: Summer 2026 Edition
Summer means travel, heat, and real risk to your compounded GLP-1 medication. Peptide-based medications like semaglutide and tirzepatide are temperature-sensitive — and compounded formulations may be more vulnerable than branded pens because they lack the robust stabilizers built into commercial products.
Temperature Rules
| Zone | Temperature | Action |
|---|---|---|
| ❄️ Frozen | Below 36°F / 2°C | DISCARD — freezing destroys peptide structure |
| ✅ Refrigerated (Ideal) | 36–46°F / 2–8°C | Primary storage — always return here |
| ⚠️ Room Temp | 59–77°F / 15–25°C | Acceptable for short periods (travel). Clock starts. |
| 🔴 Overheated | Above 77°F / 25°C | Potency degrades. Above 86°F / 30°C: DISCARD. |
Summer Travel Checklist
- Insulated travel case: A medical-grade cooling wallet (FRIO, MedAngel) keeps medications in the safe zone without ice packs that risk freezing.
- Never leave in a car: Car interiors can exceed 140°F in summer sun. Not even for 10 minutes.
- Hotel fridge: Place in the main fridge compartment, NOT the freezer. Mini-bar fridges sometimes freeze items near the cooling element.
- Flight carry-on: Always carry on, never check. Cargo holds can freeze. TSA allows injectable medications — bring your prescription documentation.
- Backup dose timing: If traveling across time zones, maintain your injection day. A few hours early or late doesn't matter — skipping a full week does.
What to Do If Your Medication Got Warm
Under 77°F for less than 24 hours: Return to refrigeration. Generally still usable — but potency may be slightly reduced.
Over 86°F or unknown duration: Contact your pharmacy. When in doubt, discard and request a replacement — the cost of a new vial is less than the cost of taking degraded medication with unpredictable dosing.
Visual check: If the liquid appears cloudy, has particles, or has changed color, discard regardless of temperature history.
Foundayo (Oral) Advantage for Summer Travel
One area where the new oral GLP-1 clearly wins: Foundayo stores at room temperature, has no refrigeration requirement, and fits in a toiletry bag. For frequent summer travelers, this is a meaningful convenience advantage over injectable compounded formulations.
