How to Store Your GLP-1 Medication in Summer Heat

Critical: Semaglutide degrades above 86°F (30°C). Tirzepatide has similar limits. A car interior can exceed 150°F in 30 minutes. Proper storage isn't optional — it determines whether your medication works.

Summer heat is the invisible enemy of GLP-1 medications. Peptide drugs are temperature-sensitive proteins that lose potency when exposed to heat — and unlike an antibiotic that just expires faster, a degraded GLP-1 may provide no therapeutic effect at all while still causing side effects.

Summer Danger Zones

Parked cars: Interior temperatures reach 120-150°F within 30 minutes on a 90°F day. Never leave medication in a parked vehicle — not even "just for a minute."

Mailboxes: If your medication ships to your home and sits in a metal mailbox in direct sun, temperatures can exceed safe limits. Schedule deliveries when you'll be home, or use a shipping locker.

Outdoor events: Beach days, cookouts, sporting events. If you carry a pen for your weekly injection, it needs a cooled case — not your pocket or a beach bag in the sun.

Power outages: Summer storms knock out power. If your refrigerator is off for more than 4-6 hours, your medication may have exceeded safe temperatures. Check with your pharmacy about replacement policies.

Cooling Solutions

FRIO wallets use evaporative cooling and maintain safe temperatures for 24-48 hours without ice or electricity. Reactivate by soaking in water.

Insulated medication travel cases with gel packs maintain 36-46°F for 8-12 hours. Good for day trips.

Mini portable coolers (USB-powered) maintain precise temperatures indefinitely. Best for extended travel.

How to Tell If Your Medication Was Heat-Damaged

Unfortunately, there's often no visible sign. The solution may look identical but have reduced potency. If your medication was exposed to temperatures above 86°F for more than a few minutes, contact your pharmacy about replacement. Don't assume it's fine — the cost of a wasted month of reduced-potency medication exceeds the cost of a replacement vial.
